Bespoke Roof Terrace Design London – Transform Forgotten Skylines into Private Urban Sanctuaries

Transform your forgotten skyline into a private urban sanctuary. In a city where space is the ultimate luxury, your roof terrace is more than just an outdoor area—it is an extension of your home and a retreat from the pace of London life.

Whether you envision a lush botanical escape, a sleek entertainment hub, or a minimalist sun deck, we bring world-class landscape design to the London skyline.

We’ve transformed 80+ exposed high-rise roof terraces across London, Surrey and Buckinghamshire since 2019 – turning windy, challenging spaces into lush, low-maintenance private escapes with custom steel/zinc planters, lightweight soils, tree anchors, automated irrigation, atmospheric lighting, BBQ zones and securely weighted marine-grade furniture.

Romantic Garden

Corlea designed and installed the garden in my newly built house. She had creative and original ideas for layout and plant combinations, resulting in a unique and magnificent space. I am happy that I went with her bold ideas instead of a “safe / same-old” garden as it has brought so much joy to my family.

Corlea understood the heart of my ideas when I was unable to completely understand and express them myself. She incorporated other creative elements into my ideas, using this as the basis for great design themes.

I also appreciated her professionalism when she would tell me that something I wanted would not work, instead of just going along with it to make me happy. In such cases she would provide suitable alternatives that would maintain the integrity of the design.

I had a great experience throughout the process, and feel confident in recommending Corlea as someone that can create distinctive and interesting spaces for her clients.

Indigenous Garden

It was a pleasure having Corlea create our beautiful indigenous garden.
She is enthusiastic, creative and very knowledgeable.

Throughout the year, there is always some plant or shrub in full bloom and every corner of the garden has its own sense of enchantment.

She was always receptive to any additions we wanted or any changes we required and even now with her having emigrated to the UK, she makes herself totally available to us and is still our go to person.

Aloe and Cycad Garden

Corlea from Mad About Gardens designed my aloe and cycad garden. It is so beautiful and gives me joy each time I see it.

Corlea has a sound understanding of design principles and a deep empathy for plants. She feels where they will thrive.

I can whole heartedly recommend the work of this talented young woman.

Our Process Explained

Roof Terrace Timeline

We’ve streamlined the roof terrace design & build process based on feedback from high-rise clients.

DESIGN-ONLY CLIENTS

If you’re the sort of person who gets ridiculously excited about gardening, pops into the local nursery and wants to buy the entire shop, but you’re still waiting for the slow builder to finish your house extension…

…then it’s best to get the design done now.

That way, when the urge strikes, you’ll know exactly what plants to buy and where everything goes.

DESIGN & INSTALL People

You need a roof terrace refurb & you need it NOW; you are so excited you just can’t sleep!

You will give Corlea a call to get the ball rolling, & this is what will happen:

SITE SURVEY & DESIGN CONSULTATION

Corlea will visit your Domestic or Commercial Garden to carry out a property survey, assess aspect, wind speeds/exposure, structural loading limits, drainage points, leaseholder rules, and any other elements which may affect the Design of your new Garden.

During the initial consultation we will discuss your budget, establish how you want to use your Garden, and decide what features you would like to be included, such as furniture, lighting, water features and storage solutions.

DESIGN

We will draw up 2 to 3 initial design in 3D. We then design until it is what you want, if we did not get the design right first time around. When you approve the design, we will prepare scaled drawings, including sizes, plant names and quantities, custom steel or zinc planters, lightweight soil mixes, drought-resistant planting schemes, atmospheric evening lighting, BBQ units and marine-grade furniture, finishes and all other details.

GARDEN CONSTRUCTION

Once the Design & quote has been agreed, the construction of your new Garden will take place on the agreed start date. All work is carried out to the highest professional standards. We ensure to follow the agreed Design and specifications to provide the finished look you desire.

MAINTENANCE

Once the Garden transformation is complete our professional team will revisit to monitor its development. We offer a scheduled maintenance plan to keep your new garden looking its best all year round, or we will tell you how to do it yourself…

Tailored Options for You

Roof Terrace Design Cost London

Costs for bespoke roof terrace design in London vary widely depending on size, wind exposure, structural loading, materials and features – but every project starts with a free discovery call.

It is very difficult to give an accurate figure as there are so many variables, but we will work towards your budget.

Artificial lawn, planters, lighting | Composite decking, irrigation, seating | Full kitchenette, pergola, storage

Sometimes we change the sizes of plants to give you a more instant look, or you can wait for the WOW over a year or 2.

We can change to different materials with similar looks to fit within budget. You might want to choose between sculptures from well-known artists, or something from your local village shop.

It’s all up to you. Whatever you desire, we will take your dreams and turn them into reality.

A rough indication of Design & installation costs:

A small garden ranges between 25000 to 30000
A medium garden ranges between 25000 to 50000
A large garden ranges from 50000 to OMG…

We specialise in wind-tolerant, drought-resistant plants that thrive in exposed high-rise conditions – hardy evergreens, Mediterranean olives/lavenders, structural grasses – so your terrace looks stunning year-round without constant replanting.

Frequently Asked Roof Terrace Questions

Why use a garden designer for a roof terrace?

Expertise in wind loads, weight restrictions, drainage, leaseholder approvals; creates functional, sustainable skyline retreats; often boosts property value significantly.

What’s the difference between a garden designer and a landscaper?

Garden designers focus on planning and concepts—creating blueprints, planting schemes, and layouts tailored to your needs. Landscapers handle the build, like installing patios or fences. At Mad About Gardens, we offer both design and project management, overseeing landscapers for seamless results in areas like Surrey or Wiltshire. Hiring a designer first ensures the build matches your vision; skipping it can lead to mismatched outcomes.

What’s included in the design service?

Consultations, structural surveys (wind/weight), bespoke 3D plans, planting schemes with wind/drought-tolerant species, lightweight materials, project management.

Any size limits for roof terraces?

From compact penthouse balconies to large rooftop entertaining areas – we handle them all.

How do designs handle London’s exposed rooftops?

Site survey checks wind, aspect, loading; we use tree anchors, lightweight soils, hardy plants (e.g., “What plants survive on a windy London roof terrace?”).

Why invest in a bespoke roof terrace?

Turns unused space into a high-value retreat; avoids costly mistakes like plant failure or structural issues.

Typical lead times?

4-8 weeks design, 3-8 months build (longer for complex rooftops).

Sustainable options?

Native/wind-tolerant planting, rainwater systems, permeable surfaces – perfect for urban rooftops.

What are the best plants for a windy London roof terrace?

Many clients ask exactly this – exposed rooftops face strong winds, full sun and drought stress. We prioritise wind-tolerant, drought-resistant species that thrive without constant care: hardy evergreens (e.g., olives, bay), Mediterranean herbs (lavender, rosemary), ornamental grasses, succulents and structural perennials. We use tree anchors for taller specimens and lightweight substrates to keep weight down. Result: lush look that survives London’s skyline conditions year-round.

How do you ensure furniture doesn’t blow away on a windy roof terrace?

We specify marine-grade, weighted-down pieces and anchoring systems proven in exposed high-rise conditions.
